In a Facebook post on 9 February, Mr. Lodewijk Asscher, the deputy prime minister of the Netherlands, gave a detailed and sarcastic respond to hate speech posts he receives. Giving examples, such as ‘I wish your family had been deported during the Nazi era’, he explains how references to his Jewish background are misused to discredit his political views. He decided to stop using social media but regrets losing the genuine exchange of views typical of a democratic debate he had with many of his followers because of this. He concludes with a tip: “If you want to post or tweet a reaction, you should ask your partner, or your daughter for example first, if they think that is a good idea, then please do post.”
