croa2The Croatian Youth Hostel Association (CYHA), the EYCA member organisation in Croatia, has just launched a special edition of the European Youth Card to promote the No Hate Speech Movement in partnership with the Croatian Ministry of Social Policies and Youth. 5,000 special cards bearing the No Hate logo have been produced in order to increase youth participation in the campaign activities.

CYHA is an official partner of the No Hate Speech Movement in Croatia and works closely with the Croatian Government to promote the campaign. Dražen Gečević, CYHA Secretary General explains: “The No Hate Speech campaign values are closely related to the mission of CYHA, which is to help young people gain close-up experience and greater understanding of people, places and cultures. Therefore, besides issuing the special edition of the youth card, CYHA is promoting the campaign’s values of human rights, respect and tolerance to young guests from across Europe in all our youth hostels”.

CYHA uses its communication network to spread the word about campaign activities and gets involved in specific actions. For instance, the Croatian Government launched a competition for pupils, asking them to produce videos about ‘why I dislike hate on the Internet’. Over 400 secondary and elementary school pupils and 70 teachers took part in the action and produced around 70 video materials on the topic. All 400 participants in the contest will receive the special edition of No Hate Speech European Youth Cards while the 12 winners will be rewarded with free stays in CYHA hostels. During their stay, the winners will become No Hate Speech Movement ambassadors promoting the campaign to young guests staying at the same youth hostels.

croa1The cooperation between government institutions and NGOs has had good results in Croatia: the campaign is being promoted in over 1,400 schools, 38 workshops were organised and produced 185 video messages, campaign-related debates took place in 15 schools, and the Zagreb handball team is now proudly wearing the No Hate logo on their uniforms, bringing the message of tolerance to their young fans.

Background – EYCA and the No Hate Speech Movement

The European Youth Card Association (EYCA) has 41 member organisations in 38 countries across Europe, issuing European Youth Cards to almost 5 million young people. EYCA’s vision is to contribute to a Europe where all young people are mobile and active.

EYCA actively supports the implementation of the No Hate Speech campaign. Five EYCA member organisations now issue special No Hate editions of the European Youth Card: Allianssi, Finland; Mobin, Slovenia; Evropski Omladinski Centar, Serbia; Instituto Aragonés de la Juventud, Aragon, Spain and CYHA in Croatia. More is still to come!
