On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on 10th December, Youth Center “Perspektiva” in partnership with NGO “Projekte Vullnetare Nderkombetare” (PVN Albania) and NGO “LiburnEtik” organized a Human Library event under the motto “One of Us”. Human Library is a very new concept for Tirana and Albania in general. And that’s why we were even more happy to see a truly engaging group of young people – Albanians, Roma, Ashkali and expats -among the participants. Three Books… Three very different life stories united by strength of the character and not giving up. A young well-educated Roma, an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities in a wheelchair and a boy born blind, who was abandoned by his parents, but acquired impaired eyesight a few years ago. The activity was highly evaluated by the participants and the Human Books, who requested to have a bigger event in an open space in the city in spring 2017.

People reached: 32

Target groups involved: Young people with disabilities, Roma and Ashkali youth, ethnic minorities

National Campaigns:

  • Islamophobic hate speech
  • Romaphobia and anti-gypsyism
  • Hate speech targeting persons with physical or mental disability

Other campaigner’s use/multiply/adopt or learn from your practices: Human Library is a great tool to address stigmas and challenge perceptions through face-to-face encounters. The activity is relatively easy to organize and it has a very powerful impact on both - participants and the Books.

Place: Tirana, Albania, 10 December
