CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER 26 MARCH 2014

MARCH, 2014

NEWS OF THE CAMPAIGN

Dear %%FIRSTNAME%%,

The United Nations has defined 21 March as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. To celebrate this event, the No Hate Speech Movement is organising its first European Action Week of the year against racism and discrimination. This week will be held until 28 March. We invite you to visit the platform of the Movement to see what the actions that we recommend you to take are. You can take part in one or more of them to fight for a racist-free environment!

If you organise relevant activities/projects during this Action Week and you wish to share them with us, you can from now on use our new system for reporting activities on the coordination website. You will find a form to complete, giving you the possibility to inform us about your activity and to add some photos and/or videos. You can als write to youth.nohatespeech@coe.int if you want to give more details about it. By sharing this information, you become a source of inspiration for others who would like to be part of the Movement!

The new brochure of the Campaign is now downloadable on the co-ordination website!

An interesting case, giving rise to a judgment of the First Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (not final) will be argued before the Grand Chamber in July 2014. We invite you to look at this case, Delfi AS v.Estonia in more detail. Delfi is a public limited company based in Estonia. In January 2006, the company published on its website an article concerning a ferry company. This article led to the posting on the site of several hateful comments toward the owner of the company, who sued Delfi in Avril 2006. You can read the case here.

The European Action Day against Antigypsysism and in solidarity with Roma people will take place on the 8 April. To celebrate this day, we will invite you to several activities to raise awareness about racism and discrimination against the Roma people.

Nils Muižnieks, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, has stressed the need to tackle the increasing racist phenomenon against Roma living in Czech Republic. He called on the Czech authorities to take preventive measures to protect the democratic values threatened by extremist groups. The press release is available here.

Nils Muižnieks has invited all Council of Europe member states to implement the Campaign. He insisted on the importance of the No Hate Speech Movement and why it is important to take action. You can read the article here.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGNS

The Albanian Ministry for Social Affairs and Youth is now interested in joining the No Hate Speech Movement! A coordinator has been appointed and an upcoming meeting will soon take place to define both the national committee and the programme.

In Greece, the Bodossaki Foundation is also interested in the Movement! A meeting is being planned in the upcoming months gathering representatives from the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Education, the Youth Council, and the Bodossaki Foundation to define the best way to implement the campaign in the country.

In Belarus, from 26 to 29 March, a soccer competition involving students in higher education institutes will take place in the Belarusian state University of Physical Training. The slogan of this event is: “Together we will create the future without hatred and discrimination”. Around 20 teams will take part. During the breaks, different kind of activities and shows will take place.

Also in Belarus: in May 2014 an action is planned to take place in every region of the country in the framework of the Campaign. During these events, the No Hate Speech Movement will be presented. There will also be sporting events, round tables, conferences and a concert with young people all across the country.
