MAY, 2014

Tomorrow, 17 May, is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia! For this, the Youth Department and the Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity unit of the Council of Europe are organising, in cooperation with IGLYO (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Youth and Student Organisation), a three days seminar from 15 to 17 May at the European Youth Centre Budapest on how to address homophobic and transphobic hate speech.

Saturday 17 May, last day of the seminar, will be devoted to the Action Day itself with a series of actions that you can also join! Please have a look on this link: www.nohatespeechmovement.org.

An online action will take place the 17 May from 11:30 to 13:00 CET, during which you will be able to send the following message: “Homophobic and Transphobic Hate Speech is a direct threat to our freedom of expression and the human right to freedom of speech for us all”. Follow the seminar live here

The First Meeting of the National Coordinators took place in Wépion, Belgium, from 12 to 14 May. Forty coordinators shared experiences about their national campaigns and coordinated their actions for the next steps of the European and national campaigns.

The European Youth Event gathered 5000 young people in Strasbourg from all over Europe the 9 and 10 May. The activists of the No Hate Speech Movement were active as always and the campaign was very visible and talked about! A stand was dedicated to the Movement itself and some workshops and panels were aimed at discussing the importance of tackling hate speech. A Living Library was organized by the European Youth Centre and was a great success, with more than 700 young people “reading” the books.

The campaign platform has now two additional features: a map and list of national campaign committees with links to their websites, Facebook and Twitter pages, and the list of partners associated to the campaign and their websites. These lists are constantly and systematically updated. We apologise for some omissions in the current version. Please help us to make it better by providing us any missing our outdated information.

The European Dialogue for Internet Governance (EURODig) will be held this year in Berlin from 12 to 13 June. A workshop on the No Hate Speech Movement will be run by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe. If you wish to participate, please register online until the 6 June by following this link.

SWEDEN: The Swedish Media council and the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society launched together the Swedish NHSM website during a national conference on hate speech online! Visit the Campaign in Sweden here.

A bus against hate speech. The Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Social Policy and Youth of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Family, Youth and Sport of the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) are currently implementing a regional activity with the support of the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe. This activity will consist of a bus that would have the following route: Serbia-Hungary-Slovakia-Austria-Slovenia-Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro-“The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”-Serbia and that would spread the messages of the NHSM! More information to come.
