SG NHSM European Action Day:

Love Human Rights. Every day, Everywhere, for Everyone.

Human rights are what we fight for, every day. Human rights are essential for dignity, peace and confidence in our common future – and for living together in diversity.

The European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms is the most important instrument to safeguard human rights across the whole European continent.

Hate speech, especially online, is among the most serious contemporary threats to human rights. It reinforces social divides and dehumanises people. It also feeds itself on fake news and seeks to deepen social divides. We need to respond to hate speech with human rights, with freedom, and with compassion.

I am happy to join the young people of the No Hate Speech Movement campaign and state our love for human rights – for everyone, every day, everywhere. I invite everyone to join us on International Human Rights Day.

Mr Thorbjørn Jagland

Secretary General of the Council of Europe
