From the 17th to 20th of June 40 young people age 16-30 from the Nordic countries gathered at Sola Strand, Stavanger, Norway to take action against hate speech through counter and alternative narratives.

During the four day seminar they analysed hate speech narratives, picked a case and made their own prototypes of counter speech, targeted contributions to the counter and alternative narratives we want to strengthen in society. Counter and alternative narratives based on Human Rights and Democratic values and principles.

They also developed a youth message to politicians and decision makers in the Nordic Countries which they presented together with some of the prototypes at the Nordic Conference on Hate Speech by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The youth got a lot of positive feedback, as well as national media attention.

The focus was on learning by doing and that the cases they analysed should be from their own contexts, taking from the analysis they would design, implement and evaluate their CAN before publishing on Facebook. Read more about the training here.

See the counter narrative-prototypes made by the youth on the four day training:

1: What bothers you: against transphobic narratives

2: Facebook page «Facts: The Nordic Way»: against fake news

The Internet is flooding over with «alternative facts». This prototype Facebook-page was made to address the challenges coming from fake news and create an alternative that promote source criticism and kickstarts a more nuanced debate. The group making the prototype are making similar sites in their countries.

4: What is the difference: against homophobic narratives (based on dehumanizing comments following the murders of 49 people in a gay club in Orlando, June 2016)

5: Humans are humans: against homophobic narratives

6: The truth about stereotypes: deconstructing prejudice narratives
